On Memorial Day our friend Tom was enjoying the sunshine when the holiday quickly turned into a horror-day. He was involved in a serious dirt bike accident which resulted in him having to be airlifted to Westchester Medical Center. It was here that he underwent over six hours of surgery on his arm to reattach his artery, vein, and nerve that had all been severed during the accident. In addition to the arm damage, Tom has been receiving kidney dialysis as his kidneys try to cope with all the byproducts of the muscle trauma.
MRI results showed that the ligaments are still intact on his spine which we attribute to all of your prayers! However, a brace will be needed to support the T6-7 areas until the fractures in his back heal. Currently Tom’s kidneys have started to slowly produce urine. Another sign from God that all the prayers are being heard.
Tom remains intubated in the Trauma ICU Unit. Doctors feel this is best as he undergoes transfusions and receives fluids. This is also the best option should they need to quickly get him back into surgery. His parents have had to make an amputation plan should the arm not survive. Unfortunately, if this happens, due to the level of his arm injury, a prosthetic would not be an option. No parent should have to make this plan. Kim and Matt should instead by planning for their son’s 21stbirthday celebration on June 5th!
We have ordered our first (of hopefully many) 520 piece puzzles with Tom’s picture on it. For every donation, we will write your name on the back of a puzzle piece. It is our goal to PUT TOM TOGETHER AGAIN. It takes a village to raise a child and this family needs a village to help save their child. Our hopes are that we will reach 520 donations and when the puzzle is assembled, Tom will be on the mend and able to see all those who rallied for him. The medical bills, future treatment, and therapies will be huge expenses for this family. If we complete the first puzzle, with the generosity of all of you, we will happily purchase a second puzzle and continue these fundraising efforts.
For those of you who know Tom, his love for life, the outdoors, and his family are a force to reckoned with. He is kind and patient with the most contagious of smiles. He has his entire life ahead of him and we want to shed some light as him and his family look down this long dark tunnel towards recovery.
