October 2023 Update-
It's been 15 months since JR was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a rare blood cancer that usually presents in older folks. JR is not as sick as he was when he was diagnosed and he hasn't had to be hospitalized since March. JR is unable to work due to the damage done by the myeloma and the treatment for the myeloma. We greatly appreciate all donations as it helps with the burden of our household.
We are currently in need of a new mattress. Myeloma makes bones very weak and causes them to break. As a results JR has numerous broken ribs and 5 collapsed/crushed vertebrae. Since the disease has gotten under control and JR is being given a monthly infusion that forces calcium back into his bones; his ribs are healing and he hasn't been experiencing more broken bones. Unfortunately, his back gives him a lot of trouble. Our current mattress is very old and replacing it is expensive. If you'd like to donate funds to go towards a new mattress, it would be very much appreciated.
Thank you
Kelly
July 2022-
After many months of puzzling health issues, JR was recently hospitalized and diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer. One thing about this type of cancer is that people usually only find out they have it because they are really sick. And JR is really sick. His doctors say there is a lot of research happening about his type of cancer, and the treatments and prognoses are getting better every day. So we are trying to stay positive, while also being terrified and overwhelmed.
We are in the process of getting support requests loaded in the Planner tool on this site, so people can sign up for things like driving JR to appointments, delivering meals, and visits to keep JR company while Lucy and Kelly get out of the house for a bit. We are also creating a Go Fund Me to help sustain the family while JR is unable to work. Stay tuned for more info and opportunities to help.
Thank you all, we love you and appreciate the love you have for our family!
Reminder: Please try not to ask us questions or offer advice about JR’s condition. We will share what feels comfortable to share here and in conversations with you, but fielding even well meaning questions or advice you might have about his disease and treatment can be really stressful and upsetting for us.
