You know me. My name is Phyllis Cole. You may know I have dementia. But did you know I am turning 70 on May 5th? What a milestone! I would like to use this opportunity for you to celebrate with me by donating to the most important charity in my life today. I am a member. It is my main resource for advocacy and support. The name of the organization is NATIONAL COUNCIL OF DEMENTIA MINDS.
We are people living with dementia transforming how the world views life with a neurocognitive disorder.
Our mission is to develop and support a national corps of Dementia Minds™ groups—composed of persons living with dementia—who foster education and dialogue among individuals with neurocognitive disorders, families, care partners, healthcare providers, researchers, policymakers, and communities at large in order to empower more people to live well with dementia.
This mission comes to life through these key service areas:
• Dementia Minds™ Groups
• Meetings of the Minds
• Dementia Minds: Friends & Family and other interactive educational events. We do this through...
• Creation of practical tools and resources for living well with dementia.
• Connecting and supporting persons living with dementia.
• Promoting wellbeing.
• Advocating for inclusion of persons living with dementia in all aspects of private and public life.
• Creating awareness of the diversity of experience in people affected by the many forms of dementia.
• Addressing stigma and societal misperceptions about what it looks like to live with dementia.
This is important work. We are the first (if not only) non-profit founded and organized by people living with dementia. It is important that people understand our experiences to better help themselves and/or loved ones.
