Share the story! The wolves of Isle Royale.

Tax deductible
In 2019, donors to National Parks of Lake Superior Foundation (NPLSF) helped Isle Royale National Park re-establish a wolf population on the island. Now it’s time to find out how they are thriving and share the unfolding story – and we need your help!

In 2020, NPLSF is raising funds to create an exciting K-12 distance learning educational program and a documentary film to share the story with everyone. Our $100,000 goal will help us create and share this story of an amazing natural system restoration project at Isle Royale National Park!

The Park Service is using the latest in technology to track wolves via radio and satellite collars but they can’t see actual behaviors. NPLSF is helping them to see wildlife behavior by using camera trap videography and we want to share this once in an island life time wolf reintroduction with students through a stellar distance learning documentary and educational film. The additional costs of the logistical challenges, regulations, and precautions associated with the Covid 19 pandemic have forced us to seek outside help in funding this seminal educational documentary project. Your commitment can make this happen! In return, we’ll give you the story behind the filming along with the fun and even the failures often not seen in wildlife videography. To get the rest of the story, please visit our webpage , Instagram , and Facebook.

We have the honor of working with (National Geographic grantee) wildlife photographer Drew Rush, to help us study where and which wolves are creating a pack and how individual wolves are reacting with each other and the wildlife of the park. Drew has traveled to the remote island to set up camera traps and has begun to gather information on the wolves. The initial footage captured has helped us better understand where the packs are being formed, the health of the wolves, and what females are with certain male wolves. Some of the wolf collars have ceased to function and the images have helped with identification.  We now need Drew to go back to capture more video and the possibility of pups!

Isle Royale's physical isolation and primitive wilderness has challenged human use for centuries; ironically, today it has become the Park's main attraction. Isle Royale National Park is a special place that sits on an island in Lake Superior. As a self-contained island National Park, the ecosystem of the Park is extremely delicate. To strike a balance, the National Parks of Lake Superior Foundation (NPLSF) previously joined forces in transferring a number of wolves into the Park from four different locations. The new wolves add genetic diversity to the resident wolves and help restore the natural harmony of the wild. Accessibility is only available by boat or seaplane, which has become even more challenging with the COVID pandemic. However, the work of studying the majestic wolves and restoring the ecosystem has never been more important!
