Phoenix Emergency Costs

Donation protected
My 4 month old husky puppy Phoenix was attacked by a pit bull on January 30, 2018. He unfortunately escaped my yard and was in the owner of the pit bull's yard when he was attacked.  I have known the owner of the pit bull for many years and neither one of us wanted a situation like this to occur.  Originally she was willing to work together in this unfortunate occurrence, but she has completely avoided all my attempts to discuss arrangements. So I am in the process of talking with an attorney to sue her for the damages. This will be a lengthy endeavor and in the meantime Phoenix’s care is very urgent. The amount of funding for the treatment needed for Phoenix’s medical care, rehab and recovery is very limited. I have already maxed out credit cards, depleted what little savings I had and this has really put a financial burden on me and my family. I am a single mom, I hate asking for help especially for finances, but this is a very difficult situation and I want the best care for my puppy- he deserves a chance to live a healthy life. Putting him down was not an option to me.

Phoenix is lucky to be alive and was in a critical, but stable condition at a local emergency vet after the attack. He has two broken front legs and will have at least 6-9 weeks of rehabilitation. Part of his recovery requires him to have his splints, staples and wounds checked twice a week, along with his bandages being replaced. With the necessary vet appointments and his medications, the expenses are large.

After the first 3 weeks of care, Phoenix was walking in his splints and seeming to make a strong recovery. After switching medication around, the bacteria in his wounds was starting to heal and he was growing skin over the wounds. When I took him into the vet this week for his bandages to be changed, the vet noticed some swelling on his left leg, so they X-rayed it and found that his humerus was fractured. The only way to fix this was surgery. I had no idea how he had broken this bone, but when I met with the surgeon he said there was a bite wound above the fracture and during the initial ER vet care, it was probably a hairline fracture unable to be seen on the X-rays. And because Phoenix was walking in the splints, it just put more force on that bone and it eventually fractured completely.

He had surgery on February 20, 2018. During surgery they put a plate and screws into his humerus over the fracture. He did well in his surgery, and the surgeon felt he will make a fully recovery. It is just very necessary for him to rest for at least 2 months.

This is obviously an unforeseen accident.  I try to take all the precautions on keeping my dogs safe and well trained.  Had I known pet insurance was a real thing, I would have gotten a policy and maybe not be in this predicament. The amount listed on this page was just an estimate of all the costs, as some of the treatment is ongoing. The total amount for his surgery and care that I have spent already is a little over $8000. If anyone finds it in them to help, it is so greatly appreciated.  The donations I receive go directly towards his ongoing care and the debt from the vet bills. I am hoping to actually be able to have this go to court and hopefully reach a settlement where I can pay back everyone who has helped us during this time.

Any words of encouragement or advice on anything else to do in this situation is appreciated as well.

Last, but not least, please keep both families of this incident in your thoughts and prayers. Both dogs had children who were and are very attached to their pet, and this has been a traumatic and saddening experience for them. Please pray and or send positive thoughts to comfort them during this time. Thank you for the love and continued support ❤️.
