Phillip and Justin graduated from High School in June 2020 with smiles, despite the challenges the year brought for all of us. The boys had just completed their first semester at Northeastern University in Boston and were excited to return home to Chicago to spend the holidays with their family. Then tragedy struck.
Phillip didn't feel well and on December 23rd we visited the children's ER from where he was admitted to the Adult Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. We later learned that he had lymphocytic myocarditis. The doctors have no answers as to what caused this condition or why for the next four weeks, Phillip fought for his life. One challenge turned into another one, and in the end it turned into a surrender that was heart piercing as we shared our loving goodbyes .
Despite his strength and the outpouring of love from his family and his community along with multitude of prayers, he lost the biggest struggle of his life. Even in his last days, this 18 year old was smiling and expressing love for his family, telling them not to worry. The presence of love in him and with him touched us all in ways that words can not communicate.
We believe that Phillip has received his wings and is our Guardian Angel. He will be with his twin in ways that Justin has yet to discover. He will never leave our hearts because his light, love and beautiful energy never dies. As a part of Jo, Brian & Justin's 'Village', we come together to support them in the many ways that need help to chart the next hours, days, weeks, months and years ahead.
