Autism comic book

Donation protected
Hello,

My name is Jenn Slade, founder of Cartoon Junkfood and creator of the comic book, Phill in the Blank: Quirks and All. During the day, I am an Art teacher for students from Kindergarten to Adults with special needs. In my spare time, I am a comic book author.

This is my very first comic book and my passion for the last 3 years.

The book, Phill in the Blank: Quirks and All, is about a nonverbal boy with Autism, who struggles with being misunderstood and not having a voice of his own.  It was hand-drawn, inked and water colored all traditionally. I chose to use watercolor and watercolor paper as my medium because I feel the paper texture and vivid colors add to the heightened sensory world people with special needs experience. It has been edited in Photoshop and assembled in Book Wright. I am currently finishing the last 4 pages and will be ready for printing and distributing by mid March.

 About the book:

Phill lives in his imagination and finds friends in nature. Phill finds comfort in nature because he can relate to it and doesn't have to worry about how to act and react like he does with humans at home and in school. The main characters are Phill, a tree named Oakly, who is the down to earth voice of reason, a sunflower named Cass who is the nurturing caregiver, and a weed named Bramble who is the much needed comic relief.

Phill in the Blank has a double meaning. Phill lives in the "blank", the unknown to us. He also lives in a reality where people come to their own conclusions about him, and they fill in the “blanks” with their adjectives for him. Phill is "weird", "strange", "loud", "awkward", "different", ...etc. The book name is also a play on words. PH replacing the F in "fill in the blank".

Why I am creating this book:

The intention of my book, Phill in the Blank, is to help bridge the gaps between what we think we know about people with special needs and what is really going on beneath the surface in their daily routines.

I believe there is a necessity for everyone in the world to understand people on the spectrum who cannot express themselves freely.

We should not pity them. Instead, we should try to understand how they see things from their perspective. My hope is that by creating this comic book, I am using art as a way to illustrate a better understanding of the world in which those with special needs live.

Process:

 Why crowdfund?

I considered working with a publishing house, but found it to be way too costly, and would like to have more control over the way it is printed and distributed.  I am now campaigning for donations in order to help get the book published and distributed through Blurb.com. The funding will be needed by the end of March. This funding will allow me to print books to sell at my first animation expo in April, as well as sell the books on Amazon through Blurb.com.
