Philip Salter-Mclean

We are raising funds for Mentalk in memory of our Dad, Philip Salter-McLean, who sadly passed away on 3rd February 2025. Towards the end of his life, Dad had started to reach out and engage with his own mental health, and it felt right to continue his journey by helping others to progress on theirs.

Mentalk creates a safe space for men to be able to socialise, talk, laugh and cry. They encourage those who may be struggling to reach out for support. There has been a stigma for so long about men discussing their emotions, but this charity helps to eradicate this stigma and provide much needed support for those who are willing to reach out.

A word from the founder of Mentalk:

Hello there,

I hope you're well. I wanted to share a little about a cause close to my heart - Mentalk Health Sittingbourne. We're a charity in Swale dedicated to advocating men's mental health and breaking the barriers that often shroud this sensitive topic. Our efforts are wholeheartedly aimed at ensuring that our men feel valued, visible and vocal in a society that, sadly, often expects them to stay quiet.

Our mission also focuses on tackling the subtle curse of loneliness, letting people understand themselves better and decipher the reasons behind our complex thinking and behaviour patterns. We provide support and explanation for neurodivergent mindsets like ADHD, ASD, and bipolar disorder. Our vision isn't limited to acknowledging the challenges; we are equally passionate about helping everyone realise their extraordinary capabilities and the potential of managing and capitalising their unique minds amidst difficult life situations.

Over the past years, our hard work and determination have helped more than 700 men and, even more proudly, we've been able to prevent 24 suicides throughout Swale. These efforts don't just enrich the lives of the men we work with, but also thier families - the true foundation of our community. I assure you that Mentalk Health is there for all we support, every second of every day.

We extend our reach beyond emotional assistance. We provide many opportunities for social engagement like walking groups, WhatsApp chats, and the Mentalk hub. We've also launched the 'Men's Shed,' a communal outdoor space that lets our men connect with nature.

Our work also includes school visits, assistance to young vulnerable adults, and support for partners of our men. We're fully aware that mental health isn't a solitary battle; it affects and involves the whole household.

Pride sweeps through us when we think of our accomplishments, especially considering the minimal funding. But we're fuelled by our fighting spirit, and every contribution to our cause helps us to continue to enhance and save lives of those who should never feel that suicide is their only option.

Such is the power of unity and shared empathy. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Your support could ripple into a life-changing wave more than you can imagine.
