Dear friends and loved ones, our incredible friend Phil needs our help!
In early December Phil began experiencing horrible headaches and nausea, and was unable to focus or stay balanced. He went to the ER only to discover the symptoms were being caused by a bleed in his brain. Throughout December and January, Phil was in and out of the hospital. He spent 23 days at the Kaiser in Fontana, and 21 of those days were spent in ICU. After multiple tests, and many days full of uncertainty, the doctors were unable to identify what was causing the bleed in his brain. Phil's symptoms became so severe that he was uncomfortable in many ways - he was too weak to walk, too weak to hold his head up straight, was unable to eat without throwing up, and had severe head pain.
On January 28th, Phil went into emergency surgery in order to stop the bleed in his brain. During the surgery, doctors discovered he had been suffering from an arteriovenous malformation (AVM), which is an abnormal tangle of blood vessels in his brain. AVMs are relatively rare and the chances of an AVM bleeding is very low.
It is going to take Phil around 3 months to recover from this surgery. He will be out of work for a total of four months. His parents have been by his side every step of the way, and they have missed a total of 19 days of work. Each day brings a new challenge right now - Phil has lost 25% of his body weight, and they have concerns that the rapid weight loss may have caused organ damage. Phil has trouble with word choice, as well as sentence structure, and continues to feel nauseous after eating. Even after all he has gone through, Phil still manages to keep smiling. He was looking forward to returning to graduate school, however, will be unable to return to a normal life for another few months.
During this difficult time we ask that you support Phil in any way you can. He has no means of income right now, and his focus needs to be on recovery. There is no amount too small to make a difference.
