Hey Everyone. Below is a message from our friend Phil.
As of December 18 2023 I was diagnosed with level 1 rectum cancer. Up until very recently solely based on the original pathology report and MRI myself and the surgeon thought it was going to be a simple surgery/removal of the mass and subsequent monitoring of area. This week we’ve been informed that the cancer has spread enough to cause tumour budding and has moved into the lymph nodes/fat cells possibly into the sphincter muscle. It’s a whole different situation than originally thought….. current treatment options are
#1- 5 weeks of daily radiation treatments in Kelowna. Which will lead to multiple weeks of chemotherapy back in Nelson or trail.
#2- a full abdominoperineal resection. Leaving me with a permanent ostomy bag. Minimum recovery time is 6 to 8 weeks. Normally 3 to 4 months before you’re fully operational…..
we have not confirmed with the surgeon as to how we will proceed and I do have some say in which option to choose. Currently scared AF and not sure what to do.
this is a life changing event, but we are hopeful with the proper treatment it will lead to full recovery and a life free from cancer…..
I’m 48 years old, with a massive mortgage, not much as far as savings, family members have been able to help out, but is limited.
