In loving memory of Phil Downie

On February 22, 2025, we were all shocked by the sudden passing of Phil Downie. Phil leaves his loving wife and partner in life, Kim, their daughter Taiya, their son Liam, as well as many other family members who loved him.

Phil was an ever-caring husband, father and son to his family. He was also a huge presence in his community, especially the hockey community on and off the ice. A beloved coach and mentor within the hockey community, he touched the lives of many, sharing his passion, wisdom, and guidance with countless players. Since his passing, countless moments of silence have been held at games across the island, a testament to just how far his impact reached, from minor hockey to CSSHL games and Junior games. Hockey has been more than just a sport for their family; it has been a passion and a source of connection.

Phil has dedicated many years to helping others, through his work with Crime Stoppers and previously at the John Howard Society, and in his younger years, volunteering with the RCMP and Victoria Police Reserve Programs. His contributions to the communities of Shawnigan and Victoria have been significant. Now, it's our turn to give back by supporting his family.

As Kim and her family cope with this unimaginable loss, they are also confronting the financial challenges that accompany it. Kim and Phil have always prioritized their children's futures, striving to support their dreams, helping Taiya achieve her goal of becoming a teacher and ensuring Liam has the opportunity to play hockey after high school before pursuing a university degree in criminal justice. We are asking for your support to help provide stability for Taiya and Liam, allowing them to continue doing what they love and building the futures their father always wanted for them. Any donation, regardless of amount, will help Kim and her family as they begin their journey of healing.

In addition to supporting Taiya and Liam, a portion of the funds will be dedicated to honoring Phil’s legacy as a devoted husband, father, son, and community leader. His family plans to establish a bursary for hockey players, ensuring that future players have the chance to pursue their dreams, just as Phil always encouraged them to do.
