Hello,
My name is Christiana, I'm 31 and I live in London with my husband and our two boys, Isaac, 22 months and Noah who is three weeks old.
On 15th October 2015, whilst I was 7 months pregnant with Noah, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
To say I was shocked is an understatment.
You can ready about my story here: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/real-life-stories/cancer-stricken-mum-who-delayed-7114060
Whilst still pregnant, I started chemotheraphy and had two cycles before delivering Noah via c-section on 15 December 2015, exactly two months after being diagnosed.
I still have 6 cycles of chemotheraphy to go after which I will have surgery, radiation and hormone therapy.
The hormone therapy consists of Herceptin and Perjeta. Doctors say this treatment will free me of cancer.
Whilst Herceptin is readily avaliable on the NHS, Perjeta is not currently avaliable.
Perjeta was turned down by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) in 2014, saying its price tag was almost double what it needed to be to make it acceptable for prescribing on the NHS.
For now the drug can however be obtained via the Cancer Drugs Fund (CDF) having escaped the recent culls of covered treatments.
I am currently in the process of submitting my application to the Cancer Drug Fund, but I am not guaranteed to recieve the funding this way and the fund will soon close. So the only way to find the funding, is to raise it myself.
The medical team have informed me that the price tag for Perjeta is £20,000. This is what I would like to use the money for. If I surpass the target, then a portion of the funds will go to charity to further research and help cancer sufferers like myself.
I have never been one to go "cap in hand" but I need to be alive for my boys. I want to fight this and go on to help others who are struggling with the same condition and raise awareness that this can happen to anyone.
Cancer does not discriminate.
Thank you for your time.
Christiana :)
