PhD project aiding schooling for Ethiopian kids!

Help me finish my PhD project supporting children with developmental disabilities and their teachers in Ethiopian primary schools!

In Ethiopia, the majority of children with developmental disabilities (such as Down's syndrome, other intellectual disabilities and autism) cannot go to school. Most schools turn them away because teachers don't know how to support them and keep them safe. This may mean that their parent, or another primary caregiver, cannot go to work and may end up in poverty. Other times, while caregivers go to work, they need to chain the children to prevent them from harming themselves. Often, these families are also discriminated against in the community.

Parents, teachers and clinicians in Ethiopia want to change this and ensure that children with developmental disabilities can access schools and be adequately supported. To do this, we need to raise awareness in the community, train teachers, ensure there are appropriate safeguarding systems in schools and more. This is the aim of our project, started in 2021 and conducted by a highly committed team of UK-based and Ethiopia-based researchers.

Because of travels, professional translations, the need to engage and consult local community members and to reimburse them for the time spent with us rather than at work, and the costs for actually doing the teacher training and other interventions, the project is expensive. We have obtained small research grants, but still have a £2000 gap in our budget.

With your help, we will have a toolkit that could be used in Ethiopian schools and support them to include children with developmental disabilities, so that they can have their human right to education fulfilled!

Any amount exceeding the £2000 will be donated to Nia Foundation Joy Center for Autism in Addis Ababa in recognition of their support with the project and their continuous work for supporting autistic children and young people and their education.

Aiutami a finire il progetto del mio dottorato, volto a sostenere i bambini con disabilità dello sviluppo e i loro maestri nelle scuole primarie Etiopi!

In Etiopia, la maggioranza dei bambini con disabilità dello sviluppo (come ad esempio sindrome di Down, altre disabilità intellettive e autismo) non può andare a scuola. La maggior parte delle scuole rifiuta l'iscrizione a questi bambini, perché i maestri non sanno come aiutarli e come occuparsi di loro. Questo significa che un genitore, o un altro tutore, non può andare a lavorare, rischiando di ritrovarsi in povertà. Altre volte il genitore, mentre è al lavoro, deve legare il bambino, per impedirgli di farsi male. In più, spesso, le famiglie con un bambino con disabilità vengono discriminate nella comunità.

Genitori, insegnanti e operatori sanitari in Etiopia vogliono che questo cambi e che i bambini con disabilità dello sviluppo possano andare a scuola e ricevere il sostegno necessario. Per fare ciò, dobbiamo sensibilizzare la comunità, istruire gli insegnanti, assicurarci che le scuole abbiano sistemi di sicurezza e tutela adeguati e altro ancora. Questo è l'obiettivo del nostro progetto, iniziato nel 2021 e condotto da un team di ricercatori dediti alla causa, nel Regno Unito e in Etiopia.

Per via dei viaggi, le traduzioni professionali, la necessità di coinvolgere e consultare membri della comunità locale e rimborsarli per il tempo dedicato a noi anziché al loro lavoro, e i costi per i veri e propri interventi di miglioramento nelle scuole, le spese per il progetto sono molte. Abbiamo ricevuto alcuni fondi, ma abbiamo ancora un deficit di 2000 sterline (2330 euro) nel nostro budget.

Con il vostro aiuto, avremo un toolkit che potrà essere usato nelle scuole Etiopi per sostenerle nell'inclusione di bambini con disabilità dello sviluppo, in modo che il loro diritto all'istruzione possa essere realizzato!

Il ricavato in eccesso delle 2000 sterline verrà donato al centro autismo Nia Foundation Joy Center ad Addis Abeba, per riconoscere il suo contributo al progetto e il suo costante lavoro nel sostegno a bambini e giovani autistici e alla loro istruzione.
