Hello! My name is Cassandra Pereira; I have a degree in Biology with a mention in Ecology from the Universidad Central de Venezuela. I am currently working as a Research Associate Professional in the Laboratory of Ecosystems and Global Change of the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC), Venezuela, conducting scientific studies of animal population dynamics associated with aquatic ecosystems and scientific studies on conservation.
My biggest dream is to do a PhD abroad. In 2020, thanks to my preparation and dedication in my Bachelor's degree, I was accepted at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, to do the PhD in Biological Sciences, Mention Ecology. In addition to this, I was selected in the National Doctorate Scholarship of Chile (scholarship granted by the National Research and Development Agency; Government of Chile), which covers my living expenses and the payment of the doctorate. On the other hand, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the closure of borders, I was unable to travel during that year. For these reasons, the start of my studies

My intention in studying this Doctorate is to dedicate myself to scientific research for the development of projects that promote the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. Once I finish my studies, I want to do researchs at the Center for Applied Ecology and Sustainability of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, focused on the population structure and dynamics of commercially exploited marine species under the context of a changing ecosystem (climate change).
The scholarship covers my living expenses and the payment of the doctorate after signing the scholarship agreement, but does not cover other expenses, such as flight tickets (€ 600) and lodging for the first month of stay in Chile (€ 500). In addition to this, as a security measure, the Chilean government requires foreigners to have international health insurance that covers COVID-19 (€ 300) and present a PCR test before boarding the flight (€ 100). These expenses, which in total are € 1500, are at my own expense. I clarify that my country Venezuela is not in the best conditions, the economic hyperinflation has not allowed me to raise money for my studies, currently the minimum salary is 1200000 Bs., my salary does not reach 2 € monthly, so It is very complicated for me to cover these expenses. For this reason, I see myself in the need to ask for help to fulfill my dream of academic growth. Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile is classified as the best university in Chile and it would be an honor to be trained as a researcher at this university. I believe that I will be able to face the intense program because I have a solid base, being my person an applied and motivated student. That said, I consider that my academic and work skills will allow me to make important contributions to this scientific area. Además de esto, la Agencia Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo, ANID (gobierno de Chile), me otorgó la Beca de Doctorado Nacional de Chile, la cual cubre manutención y el arancel. Mi intención en cursar este Doctorado es dedicarme a la investigación científica para el desarrollo de proyectos que promuevan la conservación y uso sustentable de la biodiversidad. Luego de finalizar mis estudios, quiero realizar investigaciones en el Centro de
Ecología Aplicada y Sustentabilidad de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, enfocadas en la estructura y dinámica poblacional de especies marinas explotadas comercialmente bajo el contexto de un ecosistema cambiante (cambio climático).
La beca cubre el arancel y manutención luego de firmado el convenio de beca, pero no cubre otros gastos como el boleto aéreo (600 €) y alojamiento para el primer mes de estadía en Chile (500 €). Además de esto, como medida de seguridad, el gobierno de Chile exige que los extranjeros cuenten con un seguro de salud internacional que cubra prestaciones asociadas a COVID-19 (300 €) y presentar una prueba PCR (100 €), siendo en total los gastos que corren por mi cuenta 1.500 €. Aclaro que mi país, Venezuela, no está en las mejores condiciones, la hiperinflación económica no me ha permitido reunir suficiente dinero para mis estudios, ctualmente el salario mínimo es de 1.200.000 Bs., y mi sueldo no llega a 2 € mensuales, por lo tanto, es sumamente complicado para mi cubrir estos gastos. Considero que yo podré enfrentar el intenso programa debido a que poseo una base sólida, siendo mi persona una estudiante aplicada, constante y motivada.
