Let’s bring the Tibetan resistance movement to Europe’s stages!

How far can resistance go when one’s homeland, freedom, and identity are under threat?

The new play “Phayul – Homeland Tibet” explores this question. In cooperation with the Tibet Theatre in Dharamsala and the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen, we would like to bring the production to Europe in May and June 2027. To make this special tour a reality, we need your support.

In Tibetan, “Phayul” means “homeland” — a word that evokes a strong sense of belonging for the Tibetan community in exile, but also a deep longing. To this day, thousands of Tibetans are unable to visit their homeland or explore their cultural and family roots.

The play takes us back to the 1950s, when Tibet lost its independence and resistance to the Chinese occupation began to take shape. It tells of the courage, hope, and suffering of ordinary people whose lives were fundamentally altered by violence and the loss of their homeland. Beyond the historical events, the play builds a bridge to the present and draws parallels to global experiences of war, displacement, and loss of identity.

The play is performed by Tibetan actors in the Tibetan language with German surtitles. In this way, Tibetan artists tell their story from their own perspective and in their own language.

As early as 2023, we brought a contemporary Tibetan play to Germany and Switzerland for the first time with the “Pah-Lak” tour. Twenty-two performances in eleven cities and the overwhelmingly positive response from audiences and the media showed us how theater can make political developments and human rights issues emotionally tangible through personal stories.

What we hope to achieve with the tour

“Phayul” aims to educate audiences about Tibet’s recent history and the current situation of the Tibetan people. At the same time, the play invites viewers to question their own notions of violence, nonviolence, freedom, and resistance, and to engage with human rights and the right to self-determination. Following the performances, discussions with the cast, directors, and experts provide an opportunity for questions and exchange.

For the Tibetan community in exile, experiencing a play in the Tibetan language can foster a sense of identity and strengthen their connection to their own culture and language.

Your donation brings the ensemble to Europe

For the tour, an ensemble and production team of about thirteen people will travel from India to Europe. Flights, visas, fees, accommodations, travel between venues, and the transport of costumes and props incur high costs. These cannot be covered by ticket sales and grants alone.

With your donation, you’ll help us make this tour a reality, give Tibetan artists a stage for their stories, and make “Phayul – Home Tibet” accessible to a European audience. Join us in making this special tour a reality.

Every contribution helps. You can also support the project by sharing this campaign. Thank you very much!
