Feeding Our Homebound Community

Donation protected
Friends,

San Pedro Meals on Wheels has quietly, but resolutely, served our community since 1972. In the decades since our founding, we have cooked and delivered over one million meals to those who are unable to cook, drive, shop, or leave their home for temporary or longer periods of time.

We are now making big changes. In reintroducing ourselves to the broader community, we’ve officially joined Meals on Wheels America, the national organization, and the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, we have expanded and diversified our Board of Directors as we strive to make our organization more effective and efficient.

However, even with these positive changes, we are still in great need. San Pedro, California is a beautiful, livable part of Los Angeles, but not everyone experiences it this way. Our clients largely cannot leave home for groceries, don’t drive, and don’t use the internet, credit cards, or ridesharing: the things that afford our lives access and convenience in 2018.

We are an incredibly frugal, volunteer-driven, and donation-reliant non-profit. We provide affordable meals: 2 a day (lunch and dinner), delivered 5 days a week, for only $7.50 a day. Because of this, Meals on Wheels is more than just food: we are a visitor and a check-in to our clients every day. These are our neighbors, living behind the doors of houses we recognize, apartments we hardly notice. This personal touch is the Meals on Wheels difference.

We are in need of monetary donations from individuals and businesses in the community for the following:
- a revamp and update to our pantry (food and supplies)
- long-term kitchen appliance repairs (refrigerator, stove exhaust hood, portable air conditioner etc.)
- a replacement UL-approved electric food slicer
- an “advance fund” so that costs can be covered when a client forgets/misses a payment
- outreach and marketing expenses for website and printed postcards placed in doctor's offices and hospital waiting rooms
- annual Worker Compensation Program fees for two part time employees (Chef and Office Assistant)

Donations are tax deductible and all donors will be emailed after the campaign where they will be given the option for a letter. If you cannot make a donation at this time, we highly encourage you to volunteer with us for a few hours and see what we’re all about!

We are enormously honored to do this work with our dedicated staff, compassionate volunteers, and inspiring clients. And we are thrilled to be saying hello to our community once again!

Thank you for any time and treasure you can give.

Sincerely,
The San Pedro Meals on Wheels Board of Directors

Bunny Holwerda (President), Sue Speth (Vice President), Maureen Holmes (Secretary), Jerry Henderson, Susan McKenna, Peggy Reavey, Barbara Huff, Deirdre Woolley, and William McKenna.
