Hello, my name is janine Özdemir. I’m here as I have been the main carer for wally Newman, friend and long term resident of turgutreis, Turkey. From Eastbourne originally. Wally became seriously ill on 1st august and was taken to hospital and stayed in for 10 days . Wally had a rt sided stroke leaving his left side severely affected. He had no control over his bodily functions,unable to move,roll,use limbs or lift his head. He was discharged to an empty house, no family, no money and no care. As a neighbour and nurse I couldn’t let this happen,so I began the heavy and difficult task of looking after wally, all his care,hygiene,nutrition,house needs. sadly his Turkish resisdency had lapsed during his illness, which meant insurance provision was not available for healthcare needs. After 12 days at home, Wally was starting to move about the bed,lift his arm ,leg and head. He Still needed intensive physio,I was not able to get him out of bed on my own,and there was no suitable chair to use .

Many friends and neighbours have all been involved and donations to a local pub have helped. We have got him into some local rehab unit, currently for 10 days. We have no idea if this will be enough at this stage, but it’s a start. Our goal is to get wally safe to travel back to uk, we need him to be able to sit for the travelling time. We need him to start using his affected limbs,so standing,transferring,feeding himself and other skill to promote some form of independence.

The goal for any monies received would be to pay for further rehab , flights to uk and flight companion, accommodations and any utilitie bills.

Should we reach a goal that is in excess of this , it will be used to help Wally settle in the uk. Please note, that all care I have given has been given at no charge as I care about has happened to a dear friend of Turgutreis.

Fortunately the British Embassy have the diplomatic skills of dealing with this difficult situation. So nothing has been done without their knowledge
