Wylie's Story

Imagine being trapped in your own home because the world is too loud to bear. That is Wylie's reality.

Wylie is 23 years old and has lived most of his life in profound isolation. He suffered complications during a traumatic birth. At age 5 he was diagnosed with a pervasive developmental disorder, later reclassified under Autism Spectrum Disorder.

For 18 years, we believed Wylie had autism and tried every specialist, therapy, and medication available. Nothing worked because we were treating the wrong condition—managing autism symptoms when the real problem was neurological damage from his traumatic birth.

Additionally, for the past 15 years, Wylie has battled chronic Lyme disease and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) , where his immune cells overreact to everyday triggers like foods and sounds, releasing inflammatory chemicals that cause unpredictable symptoms throughout his body. These conditions create a vicious cycle of inflammation that prevent his body from healing. Over time, his health has declined and he has withdrawn further from the world.

Our Daily Reality

Over the past four years, his symptoms have worsened significantly. Wylie is now homebound 99% of the time. His extreme sound sensitivity makes even common sounds—like a cough, a phone ping, a bird outside, or a glass clinking in another room—feel overwhelming, causing episodes that can quickly escalate to dangerous levels. He has become terrified to go outside due to unexpected sounds, making any outdoor time nearly impossible. Travel is no longer feasible. His nervous system is so dysregulated that he paces for hours, unable to stop, and his quality of life is deteriorating rapidly.

We've had crisis episodes requiring police intervention and hospital stays. It's heartbreaking and terrifying. We love our son deeply, but we've come to fear for his safety—and our own.

I've had to stop working and provide 24/7 care. Chris and I are required to provide continuous coverage to ensure Wylie is never left alone. We are no longer able to leave the house together as a couple, nor even to attend family holidays. Our entire family life revolves around his needs.
