Hi, I'm Megan, the founder, owner, and operator of Pigeons for Miles Sanctuary and Rescue. We are the first of its kind sanctuary located in New York state, focused on the care of pigeons and other nonreleasable birds who have special needs and disabilities.

I started rescuing pigeons in 2022, but my history with animals and birds spans my entire life. After high school, I attended veterinary school, but suffered an accident which left me permanently disabled, and unable to compete my degree. I continued to help animals on a smaller scale, such as foster and TNR, while undergoing physical therapy and further surgeries.

Because of becoming permanently disabled at such a young age, and without a family support system, I have always struggled with housing instability, and just financially in general. Despite this, I never stopped helping animals in the ways I was able to, such as volunteering.

In January 2020, I finally came back to New York with the intent of starting my own animal rescue. Unfortunately, just a few weeks later, the world essentially shut down, and we collectively experienced the start of the pandemic, and life as we now know it.

In 2023, I was finally able to relocate to an area where I could focus solely on the animals and my efforts to start a rescue. I currently reside in Putnam County, near the absolutely beautiful Adirondack mountains. However, the property we call our current sanctuary location is rented, which is unsustainable, unpredictable, and counterintuitive to the rescues overall mission.

By supporting this GoFundMe with your tax deductible donation, you will be helping Pigeons for Miles Sanctuary and Rescue obtain a permanent location within Putnam County where we can build accessible and special-needs centered aviaries. At this time, we are operating at capacity, and cannot accommodate new intakes until we have a permanent location to call home.

We know this is a huge ask, but funding this project will not only help us to continue doing this incredibly important, lifesaving work. It will also allow us to pursue the initiative to help the feral flocks of New York City as well. In the future, we plan to advocate for a contraceptive loft program to be introduced in and around NYC's parks, to provide a way for pigeons and people to coexist peacefully.

Our mission is one shaped by passion, personal experience, and a lot of hardship. Pigeons for Miles Sanctuary and Rescue was born out of the necessity for racing and other displaced pigeons to have a safe place to call home after being abandoned. To continue forward, we need your help to secure a permanent sanctuary location. The funds raised by this GoFundMe will be used for a down payment to secure a forever home.
