Please take a moment to read Elijahs story below. Thank you.
The whirlwind life of the crazy duck boy who endured more in his short 20 months alive than most adults do in their whole lives.
Elijah was born on 22nd January 2024 at 1.30pm weighing a massive 9lb 110z a beautiful baby boy not a care in the world just pure perfection. Elijah started to fall ill in the beginning of April with the inital thought of it being and infection or hay-fever as the month went on his condition escalated further leading to admission at the telford paediatrics where they established the devastating news that he had cancer. Elijah was first diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia on friday 25th April.
Within an hour of finding out Elijah-Jay had A.M.L he started his first 10 day block of intense chemotherapy. A meeting took place the next day discussing the treatment plan going forward they agreed on a 6 month plan of 4 blocks of chemotherapy.
Elijay finished his first block of chemotherapy on monday 5th may 2025. In the period after his first block of chemotherapy he under went multiple lumbar punctures, 2 bone marrows, multiple blood and platelet transfusions and his first ever hickman line.
His obsession with ducks first started when he had to spend 48 days in hospital segregated to the ward. He made lots of friends and adopted fhe nickname "The Crazy Duck Boy" everything and anything with a beak was a "whack whack" including pigeons. On day 49 elijah was finally allowed to go outside where he spent the day with his mommy, daddy, nana, gangan and all his aunties and uncles finally the family were back together.
Elijah continued his fight through his chemotherapy journey proceeding to his second and third block both accompanied by lumbar punctures, bone marrows, more blood and platelet transfusions and of course more hickman lines that Elijah-Jay knew as wiggles because he found them very tasty.
After his 3rd block his results showed the cancer cells were in remission!! This was absolutely amazing news and as a family we thought this was it their beautiful baby boy will finally be able to ring the bell and continue his normal happy healthy life.
Elijah was discharged from Birmingham children's hospital for a month before going back to start his forth and final block of chemotherapy. Just 2 weeks into his home leave on the 10th August 2025 elijah spiked a nasty temperature which resulted in a stay at the Princess royal paediatric oncology unit where he was put on a antibiotics to recover. Unfortunately this wasn't working and he kept spiking a temperature.
On monday 25th August elijah presented with a sore eye where the consultant prescribed him eye drops. Over the next couple of days Elijahs eye gor progressively worse showing a haematoma on his right eye. He was sent for an MRI scan on the 28th August.
29th August 2025 Elijah was blue lighted to Birmingham children's hospital on arrival they were greeted by the consultant & ophthalmologist where rhe decision was made to take Elijah-Jay into theatre and take a biopsy of his eye.
On the 30th August 2025 Elijah-Jay was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in his right eye which fascinated the staff as elijah was the first child in 20 years to have this rare condition.
3rd September Elijah was taken down to theatre for a bone marrow.
10th September the bone marrow results showed elijah had unfortunately relapsed with new angry baby cells. The decision was made to restart his treatment plan but first elijah had to undergo a 5 day adult intense block of chemotherapy then a stem cell transplant. Elijah started on the 15th September 2025 finishing the block on Saturday 20th September 2025.
Throughout all of this Elijah-Jay was so unfazed to him this was the new norm the only things that really mattered to him was peppa cakes and his whack whacks
The consultant made the decision to take away elijahs right eye in hopes that the A.M.L would be gone and would limit the chance of it returning.
He was provisionally put forward to have it removed on 13th October or the week of. A new nickname was then chosen of their little pirate and with halloween right round the corner they knew exactly what his fancy dress would be. Elijah had overcome so many hurdles and undergone so many treatments but he would always have the biggest smile on his face. Then came the rule of if Elijah can smile so can we!
On the night of Tuesday 23rd September Elijah-Jay fell poorly and spiked a temperature he was immediately started on a dose of antibiotics, luckily as the night went on his temperature stabilised.
On the morning of the 25th September again the normal happy bubbly crazy duck boy became very tired and unwell. Evening came elijahs blood pressure dropped and was unable to stabilise due to an infection in his hickman line. Around 11.30pm the decision was made to take him to theatre and remove his line as a matter of urgency in an attempt to rid his infection.
Friday 26th September 2025.
Elijah-Jay was rushed to the paediatric intensive care unit where he was heavily sedated and intubated. They started him on blood pressure medication along with some strong antibiotics and fluids in an attempt to stabilise his blood pressure and contain the infection but unfortunately the attempt was failing. A decision was then made to put elijah into a fully induced coma in hopes the consultant could take full control of elijahs little body to help and support him and his organs through this strenuous time. Unfortunately nothing the consultants did was working. The consultant explained that elijahs little body was working extremely hard to fight this infection and he was now in septic shock, the next 12 to 24 hours were crucial but within the next 2 hours she know which way the outcome would lead.
At this stage the consultant didnt hold back she bent the rules and broke boundaries in efforts to save little elijahs life. The 2 hours had passed and the consultant entered and sat the family down they knew it wasnt good news. The consultant explained how she had done everything humanly possible to try and stabilise him but unfortunately elijah had no more fight left and his little body was giving up, he was in multiple organ failure... he was dying.
Heartbroken the family spent as much time as they could with Elijah-Jay before his tiny heart gave up at 8pm that night devastating the whole family and medical crew that had helped him through his journey.
The beautiful crazy duck boy at just 20 months old gained his little wings far too soon and leaving the biggest void in their hearts
Funerals can be expensive and stressful so anything you can give would really help the family alot as they try and manage there way through this difficult time.
