MY STORY

I’m just a small-town guy who has grown up learning the game of golf slightly different to many of the people I compete with. Instead of going to a range and hitting balls, having swing coaches, and playing perfectly manicured golf courses, I learned golf at home. We lived on a farm in East Tennessee and my family owned cattle. I learned how to be accurate by hitting golf balls from the backyard into the cattle field through a tight gap between two trees. The cattle feeder was always my target. If the cattle feeder got boring, I would shape shots through the gap toward an unsuspecting cow. I’m sure those cattle were glad we moved to Arkansas when I was 13.

Those early years in Tennessee are a time in my life I would gladly go back and repeat. It wasn’t until my Sophomore year of high school when things took a turn at the 3A Arkansas State High School Tournament. I shot a 72 with one birdie and one bogey to win the title. It was then that I felt a change in confidence. After that tournament, I made the goal to play college golf and eventually play professionally.

With the help of Bruce Baxley and playing at the Searcy Country Club, golf became my job. Searcy Country Club became a place that I loved. I continue to spend as much time as possible working on my game there. The memories and experiences that I gained through practicing and playing at Searcy Country Club will stay with me for the rest of my life. The hard work put in on that range, putting green, and course payed off and I began to receive collegiate scholarship offers which increased my self-confidence and drive. This eventually brought me to the most influential time in my golf career.

My four years at Southern Illinois University have proven to me what I can accomplish with a bit of talent and a lot of hard work. I went into school as a kid that could hit the ball straight and sometimes post a good score if my attitude stayed somewhat calm. Sitting here writing this, I am a completely different person and competitor. I have matured physically and mentally and strengthened myself into a person that is confident and experienced enough to compete and win at the professional level. Entering college, I was ranked outside 4,000 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and have moved to 413 currently. Lowering my scoring average from 75.7 my freshman year to 71.64 my senior year, with an increasingly difficult schedule, made this possible. Even though my game has improved immensely in such a short time, I am confident my game will continue to progress due to an intense drive to compete and win. This passion to excel and a firm belief in myself is at the core of my dream to play on the PGA Tour.

During much of my golf career, people have underestimated my ability. Many college golf coaches told me I wouldn’t amount to much. They said I would never be able to contribute to their team. Bottom line, few seemed to have believed in my ability. Because of this “chip on my shoulder,” I am extremely motivated, dedicated, and driven to prove people wrong. Heading into professional golf will be no different for me. As can be seen through my collegiate success, I like to think I have proven many of the doubters wrong and demonstrated what I am capable of truly accomplishing. With your support, you could help a small-town kid go from aiming at cows to aiming between crowds.
