Petrinja, Croatia Earthquake 2020 Family Fund
Martina Snajder Vorkink’s hometown of Petrinja, Croatia was hit with a 6.4 magnitude earthquake on December 29, 2020. The old town was largely destroyed. We have started this fund to help raise money for relatives directly impacted by the earthquake in towns of Petrinja, Moscenica and Sisak. Martina’s cousin is the mayor of Petrinja, so funds will also be diverted to those most in need in the town(s). This is the largest earthquake to hit Croatia in modern history and completely unprecedented and unusual for this area.
Luckily, we have not yet heard of any significant injuries or casualties among Martina’s direct family members and friends, however the the news is still evolving and we are still waiting to hear from some people.
We do know that the old town center of Petrinja has been largely destroyed, a place that was significantly impacted by the war in the early 1990s. There is currently no power or running water in Petrinja, and rescuers and the military are busy trying to free people trapped under the rumble.
During our most recent trip to Croatia, Martina and I stayed with her aunt, uncle and cousin in Petrinja. There is damage to their house and roof, as well as Martina’s brother’s house.
We are so so grateful for your support, texts, calls and emails.
Much love,
Martina, Rachel, Agnes and Luka Vorkink
