Why NAMI of Massachusetts?

Peter Walker owner of Avalon Dance Productions of Belmont will be running the Boston Marathon for the sixth time. This year in support of Mental Health by raising funds for National Alliance on Mental Illness Massachusetts (NAMI Mass).  Please help Peter raise much-needed funds for this essential cause.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Massachusetts (NAMI Mass) is celebrating its 40th year.  NAMI Mass educates, supports, and advocates for all those affected by mental health conditions in Massachusetts.  NAMI Mass provides education classes and support groups for peers and family members, a resources helpline, community education in the schools and for first responders and so much more.  NAMI Mass is the Voice on Mental Health in the Commonwealth.  The organization has an active grassroots advocacy effort with the help of its 17 local chapters throughout the state.  

Having the opportunity to bring awareness and understanding of mental health in the state we call home is a blessing. Mental health is critical to our well-being and as important as physical health. So many of us have friends and family who are diagnosed with mental health issues and so many don’t seek treatment – we’re talking 10s of thousands. This opportunity allows us to be their voice and supports a worthy cause – one of which is to change the mental health delivery system in our state to one that is easier to navigate and provides appropriate person- centered, and trauma and emotion-informed care.  The pandemic has exacerbated mental health challenges with more people dealing with anxiety and depression symptoms because of loneliness, isolation, and grief.  For once mental health has experienced stigma-reduction and we can freely talk about our mental health problems.

Through dance Peter has helped many people suffering from mental health issues find their passion, purpose, love, and belief in themselves. With your help and generosity, together we can make a difference for all who are struggling in silence and help them lead productive lives and find happiness.
