Honouring the Life and Legacy of Peter Phillips (1939–2025)
Peter Phillips, beloved father, grandfather, artist, and one of the founding figures of British Pop Art, passed away peacefully on 25 June 2025.
As we come to terms with his loss, we are also reflecting on how to honour his extraordinary life’s work and ensure his legacy endures for future generations.
Over the past six decades, Peter’s art has been exhibited around the world and written about in publications, most recently including The New York Times and The Times (UK), where he is often described as one of the most under appreciated yet pivotal artists of the British Pop movement.
To preserve and celebrate his remarkable contribution to modern art, we are establishing The Peter Phillips Foundation, an initiative dedicated to:
- Cataloguing, documenting, and archiving Peter’s body of work across public and private collections;
- Building a digital and physical record of provenance, exhibitions, and publications;
- Conserving, restoring, and photographing works to ensure their longevity;
- Organising and curating exhibitions that celebrate Peter’s legacy globally;
- Developing an educational resource for students, scholars, and collectors; and
- Laying the groundwork to one day provide grants or mentorships to emerging artists, in the spirit of Peter’s lifelong belief in creativity without boundaries.
The Foundation will include both a for-profit trust (to manage future art sales, licensing, and editions) and a non-profit arm dedicated to the preservation and documentation of Peter’s work. A percentage of all future sales bearing the official Foundation seal will be contributed directly to the non-profit fund.
All contributions from this GoFundMe will go 100% toward the non-profit arm, supporting the essential work of cataloguing, archiving, and preserving Peter’s legacy, ensuring his art, history, and influence continue to be recognised and protected for generations to come.
In time, the Foundation will also seek to foster new artistic voices, but for now, the focus is on preserving Peter’s own life’s work and establishing a complete and enduring record of his contribution to 20th- and 21st-century art.
In lieu of flowers or other sympathy gifts, contributions to the Foundation are the most meaningful way to honour Peter’s life, celebrate his art, and ensure that his story, and his spirit, continue to inspire generations to come.
Peter lived for the art, not the accolades. Now it’s our turn to ensure his vision and voice are never forgotten.
