A Healing Journey for Peter Jones

After a short illness in late May, our son Peter was rushed to Dallas’s UT Southwestern Medical Center, where his doctors confirmed that Peter had only about a month to live because his liver and kidneys had failed. His whole body was yellow, he had gained over forty pounds of unprocessed fluids, and he was in agonizing pain. Peter’s only hope was a liver transplant, only possible if he had insurance, which he did not have. The situation was dire, with some of the doctors suggesting hospice care as the most likely outcome.

What we needed were miracles.  Through the heartfelt prayers of family, friends, and many other people who just wanted to help, God, in His mercy, blessed us with several miraculous events.  Along with our relentless determination, with the generous help from hospital staff, in unprecedented fashion, Peter was quickly enrolled in insurance that normally takes six months to get. However, the hospital and the required transplant procedure were not initially covered by the insurance, so Peter’s doctors made a case before the hospital board and received approval. Then the insurance had to okay the very costly surgery—three miracles in a row! Peter was so critically ill that he went to the top of the transplant list. His body was quickly shutting down and time was against him. However, due to another family’s very sad event, the greatest but most difficult miracle occurred: a young person in Oklahoma died and his/her family generously donated the liver. Four weeks from his initial diagnosis and after a six-hour operation, Peter did not die but was given a new liver and a new life! Blessed with all these graces and miracles, we are so grateful to the countless people who supported us and for every one of their prayers!

Peter has begun the long healing process, and he needs to stay in the Dallas area for the next five months for numerous doctor visits, liver transplant clinic visits, lab tests, and therapy support from UT Southwestern doctors and other professionals, only some of which are covered by insurance.  He is on his own for housing, food, transportation, and counseling. Presently, he is living in a special hotel because it is close to and partnered with UT Southwestern and provides a shuttle to the hospital for scheduled visits (it gives a discount but is not cheap).

Peter has not been able to work since the middle of May. He has no car, no money, no source of income besides about $700 a month from disability and is not able to work for at least six months. What he does have is this: family and friends who love him, a phone, a computer, 6 boxes of clothes and linens, determination, and Hope!

Peter knows that God saved him for a purpose—a purpose he is now working to discern and fulfill. So, we are appealing for help to keep this miracle going by providing him what is required for these critical five more months of healing, giving Peter a strong start on his new life. Thank you for any aid you can give and for your prayers! God bless you!
