Peter Baylis is a proud Haligonian and singer who has recently been diagnosed with a very aggressive form of brain cancer. This sudden and devastating news has deeply affected his family, friends, and the communities he has given so much to over the years.
Peter has dedicated his life to the arts and entertainment since his early teens as a performer. At 18 he quickly immersed himself in the Halifax music scene. Through the ‘80’s he fronted Steps Around The House, and into the ‘90’s he became a dynamic force, in The Hopping Penguins, one of Halifax’s most enduring and loved ska-reggae bands.
Beyond the bands, Peter’s talents have lit up the stage in various roles, most notably with his powerful portrayal of Judas, in Neptune Theatre’s 2001 production of Jesus Christ Superstar, a role he then described as the opportunity of a lifetime.
Peter is also well known to Halifax hockey fans, as the QMJHL Mooseheads, National Anthem singer. He has proudly sung “Oh Canada” for 15 seasons now. True to his Canadian roots, he is a lifelong hockey lover, and this role holds a very special place in his heart.
Peter, and his wife Jennifer are preparing for financial hardship. Their daughter Lucy is with them, postponing her return to Toronto. With this diagnosis, he is unable to work. Financial strain will mount quickly, and a mortgage remains on their home. (There was a 25-year term life insurance policy that expired in April, a month before receiving this news. Renewing was cost prohibitive given their ages) Current Employment health plans do not cover much but will provide some disability for Peter.
The prognosis is difficult, but while Peter embarks on this fight, carrying it with strength and grace, his community has an opportunity to support him and his family in a meaningful way. While Peter has been known for lifting spirits and supporting others in their time of need, it is now apparent that he too must ask for help.
Any donation, big or small, will go a long way to helping ease financial stresses and allow Peter and his family to focus on what matters most: time together.
Thank you for taking the time to read and consider. Thank you for being a member of the community that surrounds Peter with love and strength.
Please share this campaign with others, as every gesture counts.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Peter Baylis and family
