Pete Perez: A Father Gone Too Soon

Donation protected
Dear Friends, it is with heavy hearts that we share the news that on May 22, 2025 our beloved friend, father and husband Pete Perez passed away unexpectedly due to complications of anoxic brain injury from cardiac arrest. Pete was only 50 years old, and leaves behind 4 children, including his daughter Dajia, who is currently in her final year of medical school.
Pete embodied perseverance, humility and generosity. Born and raised in New York City, he overcame a difficult childhood, struggled with asthma his whole life and spent time in the NYC shelter system. In spite of many challenges, he worked relentlessly to build a better life for his family and everyone he loved.
He was determined to see his daughter graduate, support his family's future, and be present to watch his grandson grow up.

Pete juggled multiple jobs to make ends meet. Most recently, he worked mornings as a salesman in the shoe department at Nordstrom, where his dedication and work ethic caught the attention of upper management - and evenings as a doorman in Hells Kitchen. On his days off and odd hours, he took handyman and maintenance jobs on to meet extra life expenses. Even with a grueling 16 hour workday, Pete was known for his cheerful demeanor, boundless kindness and sense of humor, and an unwavering commitment to his goals, and to those he loved. He never hesitated to offer support, advice, or simply a listening ear.

Pete believed you could achieve anything you set your mind to, and he proved it every day.
His legacy lives on in the strength of his children and the values he instilled in them, and the inspiration and heartfelt friendship felt by all those he encountered.
In honor of Pete, we are humbly asking for your support. Any donation, no matter how big or small, will help Daija complete her final year of medical school, and allow the family a moment to grieve and find a way forward during this incredibly difficult time.
The cost to complete Dajia’s final year is estimated at nearly 70,000 for the 3 semesters. While we hope that scholarships and financial aid may ease the financial burden, your generosity can make a direct, immediate impact.
From the bottom of our hearts we Thank You for your kindness and compassion and appreciate any support you can offer to honor Pete’s extraordinary life, and help to fulfill the goals he was working so hard for.
With much gratitude,
Emily Setzko and Pete's family
