PES Raspberry Pi Club

Donation protected
Overview:
Pasadena Elementary School and the PTA is offering a new STEAM club to expose students to additional areas of technology. The club will utilize RaspberryPi’s to educate the students in the areas of information technology (IT), software development and user experience design. During each club meeting, the students will gain hands-on experience with the technology. The students will learn to break large projects into small tasks, understand an Agile approach and utilize pair programming to complete tasks.

Club Structure:
This club will focus on building STEAM skills surrounding technology. The students will be encouraged to work together to solve technical problems with the help of volunteers.

Club Goals:
The overall goal of this club is to configure  RaspberryPi devices as indoor weather stations for each classroom in the school **. The devices will be networked together so data can be gathered and stored in a single location. The student participants will learn skills that stretch the entire spectrum of IT to include infrastructure, networking, software development, and public speaking. When the weather stations are deployed to each classroom, the club will send a team to each classroom to demonstrate what they have accomplished.

School Involvement:
To engage the entire school, each classroom (K-5) will be asked to collaborate to design, build, and decorate a RaspberryPi for use in their classroom. Ideally, the design would be related to classroom curriculum and be incorporated into day to day as an educational experience.

Schedule/Frequency:
The club will meet for an hour, once every two weeks. The day and time are TBD

Grade Levels (Maximum Participation):
This club is offered for grades 3-5. The maximum participation is 18.

Selection Criteria:
Each student that is interested will be requested to submit a short essay (1-2 paragraphs) to describe why they are interested in technology. This is an ambitious project so the volunteer team will be looking for highly motivated students that are focused on the overall success of the club and their team.

Detailed Goals(Rough Bi-weekly Schedule):
-Introduction, unbox gear, survey classrooms, inventory
-Power on and play, install operating system, networking
-Data structure,software development
-Software development, user experience design
-Software development, user experience design
-User experience design
-Deployment
-Public speaking

Funding:
Anne Arundel County Public Schools requires that the computer information system be configured as a standalone network. This requires the purchase of additional equipment to provide a network the students can use to perform the tasks. Supplemental fundraising will be needed to cover all costs of the club.

** Based on the level of funding, the first year may be used to pilot the new STEAM club.
