Single Mom Disabled by Car Accident
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Elly. Most of you seeing this know who I am. I am a single, hard-working mother who taught high school for nearly 10 years. I continue to advocate for and support the disabled and homeless communities.
In October, 2023, I was in a car accident which totaled the vehicle and left me disabled. The at-fault driver was cited for running a red light, after rolling into the road and stopping, the moment before I entered the intersection. After vetting the driver, we believe she caused this accident in an effort to make a fraudulent insurance claim.
Felony record - fraud.
The driver is uninsured.☹️
I will likely never regain full use of my dominant (right) hand/wrist and upper extremities. A team of doctors discussed the possibility of conducting a nerve study, but decided against it because my treatment would likely remain the same. Subsequently, I was diagnosed with a debilitating condition. I will not reveal my condition at this time, due to safety & privacy purposes, but it is possible to go into a form of remission.
I may never be able to hike, travel, or use my body the way I once did, but I plan to live a full and successful life.
I travel to Durham for ongoing medical procedures and I take Uber to medical appointments in Burlington (3x weekly). The procedure has great risks. However, these risks do not outweigh the ability for me to live a more normal life.
I have been out of work since December 22, 2023 and unpaid. I was recently denied short-term disability benefits. I have filed an appeal and I am working hard everyday in an attempt to return to work.
I don't believe I need to explain the high costs associated with raising children, including those with special needs; how quickly medical expenses add up; or the costs associated with traveling.
I will adapt and find ways to be resourceful and successful. Until then, I find myself needing help. I am human and recognize that people need people. I come from a less than privileged background with family members who are disabled. I will continue to work hard to overcome my circumstances and advocate for those less fortunate.
I appreciate any support you may be willing to extend during this difficult time, for me and my family. All donations will go towards medical & health care expenses, child care expenses, transportation, costs associated with living, and (most especially) towards *Adapting my Life around my Disability. I have already begun to purchase items for accessibility.
One kind word has the ability to change a person's day. One inspirational story has the ability to change a person's outlook. As I adapt to my new disability, I promise to continue to do all I can to advocate for and help our disabled communities (and homeless), now and always.
I will keep you updated on my progress. I appreciate you all so much!
With Love,
EL
