Perennials — An Australian Mockumentary Short Film

Donation protected
Hi, I'm Caitlin — a screenwriter and producer based on the South Coast of NSW, Australia.
I have spent the last few months writing a short film about grief and community and now, we are looking for funding.

WHAT'S THE FILM ABOUT?
It's a mockumentary comedy-drama; imagine Best In Show meets Frances Ha meets The Farewell. Slapstick chaos, deadpan honesty and a gut-punch of emotion you don't see coming.

Short synopsis: A young woman moves back to a small coastal town to be close to her ailing filmmaker grandmother, who promptly recruits a camera crew and drags her granddaughter along to the local garden club. What unfolds is funny and messy and devastating - a story about grief, loneliness and the unexpected community of people who show up for you when everything falls apart.
It's shot in the mockumentary style, which means the camera is always in the wrong place at the right moment, and the characters know they're being watched - which somehow makes everything more honest.

This is a story about what it means to be held by the people around you, even when you're convinced you don't need them. We think a lot of people will recognise themselves in it.

HOW WE'RE MAKING IT
We have a producer and a cinematographer attached. We're applying for Australian screen industry grants and we're filming entirely on location in Ulladulla (my hometown) on the NSW South Coast — a coastal community that has come on board to support this production and whose landscape and spirit is woven into the DNA of the story.
We're aiming to raise money through community fundraising to put toward production costs, including location fees, equipment hire, cast and crew, post-production - editing, sound design, colour grading - and festival submission fees.

WHERE THE FILM IS HEADED
We're entering this into Australian and international film festivals. A story this grounded in community deserves to travel - and we intend to take it as far as it can go.
We'll also be holding a community screening on the South Coast.

WHAT YOUR SUPPORT MEANS
Every dollar goes directly into the film. Just a filmmaker and a small, dedicated crew trying to make something honest and funny.
Every supporter who donates will be thanked by name in the film's credits.

If you can't donate right now, sharing this page costs nothing and means everything. The more people who know this film exists, the better chance it has of getting made the way it deserves to be made — carefully, with heart, and with the support of people who believe Australian stories are worth telling.

Thank you for reading. I'm so excited for you to be a part of this.

— Caitlin
