The English version
She is Elisa, my 93-year-old aunt who has been living at the Don Carlo Cavina nursing home in Lugo di Romagna since 2017.
For Elisa, Giulia, Pino, and all the other residents.... the Don Carlo Cavina is not just a facility, it is their home, it represents their world.
The May 17 flood disrupted the life of the house, forcing the guests, for almost two months, to give up common activities, unable as they were, to reach the ground floor where there were usually sharing activities.
Most of them live in wheelchairs, do not use the stairs, and by force majeure were forced to stay all that time between the room and the small dining room on their floor.
A really difficult time for all of them to cope, needing to maintain a peaceful and engaging daily routine.
Those few who were able to walk were traumatized when they saw from their windows the river of water and mud flooding the basement and then, many days later, the myriad of mud-filled objects resting in the yard.
Water and mud destroyed elevator motors, also knocking out the house's technical systems. The photos speak for themselves and show the state of the interior of an elevator, its column, and its technical equipment. Unfortunately, the format of the photos on this site does not allow a good view of reality.
The muddy water invaded the entire basement reaching almost to the ground floor, where the rooms of the completely dependent residents are.
In a world where the most fragile people are often forgotten and cast aside, Don Cavina provides a firm and welcoming refuge, because here one breathes empathy, protection, gentleness, and family affection.
Everyone who works there has put all their energy into countering the hardship created by the flood.
The Sisters who run the house, restored the functionality of the facility as soon as possible, even though they did not have enough money to do so.
They are not entitled to any help from the State and are asking the community to stand by them at this difficult time, in which they must cover the cost of repairs.
They have taken out a debt with the Bank to cover these expenses. But now they have to start giving it back.
Any help can make a difference.
When it will have overcome its difficulties, it will be great for Don Cavina to welcome you who will decide to support them, embrace you with heartfelt gratitude, and show you what you have made possible.
It was not possible to organise the collection with the Sisters as the direct beneficiary because the Gofundme transfer does not have a reason. The sisters can only receive donations with the reason 'liberal donation for worship and religion' to avoid paying taxes on these amounts.
For this reason, I have set up the collection in my name; every Monday, if there have been donations during the week, I receive the bank transfer from Gofundme and immediately transfer the same amount to the Sisters.
The choice of an online collection was made at the request of some people living abroad who wanted to donate but found it difficult to make an international bank transfer directly to the Sisters.
This online collection complements the direct collection by bank transfer to the Sisters' bank account.
