Peppermint House Wild Bird Haven

The rehabilitation of wild birds has been a passion of mine since my early teens.  There is nothing quite like the sense of fulfilment I feel when a bird is released back into the wild after a period of convalescence.  Anyone who has worked with wild birds will know that they have an indomitable will to live.  I love those first moments when a bird which would have died without human assistance opens its wings and flies free once more.

Sometimes, I am inundated with calls about sick, injured and orphaned wild birds, from both the public and our local veterinary surgeons, and my current facilities are not enough to cope with the demand.

Now that I have moved into a property which has lots of room for wildlife rehabilitation, I am keen to expand this work, specialising in seabirds, raptors and owls, but also providing sanctuary and rehabilitation to any other birds that require it.  In order to do so, I need large purpose built aviaries, and I need a hospital in which I can give newly injured birds the assistance that they need.

I have designed a 9 metre long aviary with two partitions in the middle, which can be adapted into one long flight aviary or three smaller enclosures.  Around $5000 of the money I hope to raise would go towards constructing this aviary, which will have a concrete base, three galvanised metal sides and a pool for seabirds.  The remaining $3000 would go towards creating a hospital inside a pre-existing outhouse, with a tier of treatment cages, heating and heat-pads, water and food containers, first-aid supplies, and a refrigerator/freezer for storing food and medication.

I have already installed surveillance cameras for monitoring purposes, but I now need donations to help us complete the Peppermint House Wild Bird Hospital by providing birds with custom-built accommodation which really meets their needs.  Commercially-constructed aviaries are made with the needs of domesticated birds in mind, whereas wild birds have very specific requirements which are best met by purpose-built enclosures.

All of this work is done on a volunteer basis; funding is crucial for its continuation and expansion.  I will be very grateful for donations - and so will the birds.  The sooner the funds are raised, the sooner the birds will have these facilities, and I will be able to offer hospital care to more birds in need.
