I am Jeff Schaefer, small business owner in Redlands, CA. I am raising money to help pay the veterinarian costs resulting from a traffic collision when I hit a lost dog with my car late at night on Friday, February 5, 2016.
I was driving home after a long day at work. While proceeding past a residential area with no street lights, a small dog ran straight towards me in the middle of the road. I swerved as best I could, but still struck her, breaking her pelvis in 6 places, and a femur. With the help of a nearby resident, I quickly located a 24-hour veterinarian hospital, and had the dog there within a few minutes.
The veterinarians told me the dog (whom I now call "Penny") is about 3 years old, and the prognosis is that she will live a completely normal doggie life once she recovers from surgery. So I approved the charges for surgery rather than having her euthanised.
Penny required extensive surgery to repair her pelvis and femur (plates inserted/screwed into place). The surgery took place on the evening of February 9, 2016.
The veterinarians, observed/ found that Penny had no collar and no microchip. So I finally located her owner via Facebook. The owner had posted to the Redlands Pets Lost/Found page. There was and is no question that I had located her actual owner.
I had no big expectation of locating the owner and recovering the costs. But now that I have, and after careful consideration of that home environment, I felt it was the right thing to put Penny back into her home.
Unfortunately, the owner is not able to pay for the veterinarian expenses. So, I would very much appreciate assistance in paying the $4,062.25 bill from the initial visit and surgery. Either the owner or I will cover the costs of the remaining follow-up visits (estimated by the vet to be about $170.00 if there are no complications). And I will pay for a microchip.
