Penny and Mike Cox were involved in an accident Tuesday, September 17th , 2019. The couple was traveling from Michigan to Arizona when they stopped at a truck stop in Las Cruses, New Mexico to rest and shower before finishing their journey Wittman, Arizona. The generator ignited and they were caught in a flash explosion resulting in significant burns on both, leaving them in critical condition. Mike and Penny were life-flighted from Las Cruces to the burn unit, at University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas.
Mike has burns on 18-20% of his body and has received a skin graph to begin his healing process. Penny has burns on 46.5% of her body and remains in critical condition in the ICU. She also has undergone her first skin graph. Doctors believe that Penny will remain in the burn unit for approximately two months before moving into therapy. Mike will be released on the 27th of September to start rehab.
Thankfully, there has been positive news in recent days, although the road to recovery is going to be a very long, uphill battle. There will be many more surgeries and therapy endured by the couple to make a complete recovery.
Mike and Penny were in the midst of moving to Wittman and had all their belongings with them, including their beloved dogs and horses. Caring friends have selflessly offered to make sure all the animals and belongings are being cared for during this overwhelming time.
