Open cranial surgery while awake for 5 hours for a deep brain stimulation implant is terrifying for anyone, but it’s personal when it’s a former classmate from middle/high school days. On top of that, imagine having to choose between this life-altering surgery and making ends meet. No one should have to make this choice. In 54 days, Penny will undergo this stressful surgery.
Penny (Freeland) Enzor, THS Class of 1980, has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. She’s been battling its progression for three years now. Penny is having progressively worse balance issues, coping with her body changing and not working properly, among other progressive symptoms. And having lost a leg to a traumatic event in 1994 ending her nursing career and causing severe PTSD, it makes things all the more difficult for her. Yet she doesn’t complain. She prays for strength to manage, and she’s lived below the poverty line on a small disability income since because her life as she knew it ended. Then came the Parkinson’s diagnosis in 2021.
When her neurosurgeon first told her she needed to consider DBS (Deep Brain Stimulation), she decided against it due to the cost, patient care expense for recovery, travel and hotel costs to University of Alabama in Birmingham, medications, food, etc. She was understandably fearful on many levels.
Penny’s situation is progressing, and she’s opted to try the first of two surgeries. She needs our help. A group of friends have gotten together to help raise $8000 for her initial care. The surgery is scheduled for October 2, 2024, just 54 days from today to help extend her quality of life. The money raised will be used for all things related to her surgery, hospital stay, travel to and from, in-home care for at least two weeks upon leaving the hospital, food, a wig and enough to help provide a financial cushion for whatever may come. No one should have to do this alone. EVER.
Our prayer is that Penny doesn’t bear this without support. Help us help her relieve some of her burden. Please consider giving in support of Penny. She needs us. Please SHARE THIS LINK if you will. Any amount you can give will help.
Prayerfully,
Team Penny
