Penny Cats Kidney Removal Surgery

I simply hate asking for help, but when it comes to family, I put my pride aside and ask for the support of those around us.

At our yearly vet check-up for our sweet 8-year-old cat, Penelope aka Penny, 'something hard' was felt during her physical exam. An x-ray was performed, showing a very enlarged right kidney, and we were referred to Virginia Veterinary Specialists for a diagnostic ultrasound. Thankfully, it's not cancer, but it is unfortunately an emergent situation that requires surgery to save her life. Penny was diagnosed with kidney stones, which led to a full blockage of her right ureter and essentially a completely non-functional right kidney.

The best resolution for her is to completely remove the right kidney and right ureter. This procedure is called a Nephrectomy and can only be performed by a certain level of veterinary surgical providers.

We have been quoted $815 for the initial ultrasound, then $4,500-$5,000 for the actual Nephrectomy, and then a secondary post-surgical ultrasound follow-up, which again would be another $815. So in total, we're looking at the ballpark of $6,130 to $6,630 at the moment.

With both parents working full-time, 2 young kids, and the general cost of childcare, putting this all onto a care credit debt would significantly impact our overall daily lives.
