What would it be like if boys thrived in middle school instead of survived middle school? Imagine a school where boys are encouraged to explore their curiosity and learn by building and doing. A place where boys are able to discover who they are at their core and which talents and passions they can contribute to the world. A place to be safely vulnerable, emotionally empowered and taught how to communicate clearly and empathetically. A school where boys come alive and are encouraged to explore their potential rather than find all the ways they don't measure up. Imagine a school designed to let boys embrace their masculinity while simultaneously challenge their privilege, interrogate racial hierarchies and implicit biases, and understand that power comes from compassion and not control.
We imagined all of this and decided to create the Peninsula School for Boys .
The idea for the Peninsula School for Boys began when each of us, on our own independent searches for a middle school for our sons, couldn’t find what we were looking for. On the San Francisco Peninsula, schools like this exist for girls but not for boys. Gatherings at coffee shops to talk about our shared vision quickly turned into regular meetings and phone calls. Those conversations expanded to friends and educators and it was clear there was a wider interest in an all-boys middle school on the Peninsula.
Together we share a vision for creating a unique middle school experience for boys. Unlike any other school in our community, Peninsula School for Boys will empower all kinds of boys to become all kinds of men. We are fiercely committed to creating a community that is informed and enriched by the voices of different races, religions, family makeups, and economic backgrounds, where everyone feels welcome. Through a hands-on, active and challenging curriculum, we will help middle school boys develop themselves intellectually, emotionally and physically. PSB boys will do, think, feel, connect and engage in ways that aren't encouraged or even available through other educational avenues.
No other school in our area is designed and built solely around the specific developmental, academic, social, and emotional needs of middle school boys. Our all-boys middle school program will cultivate teenage boys and men that are engaged, conscientious and passionate lifelong learners. Imagine the impact they will have on our communities and the world!
To create this amazing opportunity for our boys, we need to hire fantastic leadership and staff and secure a space that inspires imagination. We are raising funds to hire a head of school and an initial staff of two additional teachers, secure a location, and cover the many startup and administrative costs associated with launching a new school. We are applying for our 501(c)(3) status but need funding immediately. Please join us in being a pioneer for boys’ education on the peninsula!

GoFundMe administrative notes:
There is broad support for this initiative within our community and a number of volunteers are actively engaged. Justin Rowe is helping administer this GoFundMe page and all distributions will be performed by Justin in conjunction with the three founders listed above. Because we are not an official charitable entity yet, the funds will be distributed into a personal bank account before being used to pay for school-related costs. We can provide a detailed accounting to anyone who is interested. Please send any requests via our website or social media accounts.
