My name is Portia. A number of us are collaborating to start a Fund for our friend
and colleague PENELOPE HYNAM
Now in her 70’s and retired, Penny is suffering with severe and painful Osteoarthritis. She is in
need of a total left knee replacement. This involves major surgery and then months of post-
operative recovery.
Those of you who know her will know of her tireless career since 1992. That's when she left a
successful film career in Canada and returned to her parent’s home country of Barbados. She
worked in heritage restoration as Executive Director of the Barbados National Trust and many
historic buildings were restored under her management, such as the historic Morgan Lewis
Windmill and the George Washington House and Museum.
She combined her love for heritage with her passion to improve the film industry in Barbados.
Using her many years of experience in the Canadian film and television industry, she helped to
start and became the first President of the Barbados Film and Video Association (BFVA), now in
its 12th year. She has produced and/or directed many documentaries about her island home.
With a teaching colleague she has taught successful courses in film producing.
Now Penny needs our help. The cost of the surgery and post-op treatment is over $70,000
Barbados dollars (1 US dollar is 2 BDS dollars, 1 Canadian dollar is $1.54 BDS). Our goal here
is to reach $50,000 BDS.
We hope that her many friends abroad, in Canada and in the Caribbean will help us reach this
goal and get Penny on her feet again.
