Penang Jewish Cemetery

Donation protected

The Penang Jewish Cemetery is 180 years old and believed to be the oldest single Jewish cemetery located in Southeast Asia.

There are approximately 107 graves located in the cemetery and it is the only cemetery established solely for the once small and thriving Jewish community in Malaysia.

The oldest Jewish tombstone is dated 9 July 1835 and is believed to mark the grave of an English woman, Shoshana Levi, who was the benefactor who donated the land where the current cemetery stands. Most of the graves take the form of unique triangular vaulted-lid casket, resembling ossuaries commonly found in the Middle East.

Due to its historic significance, the trustees of the cemetery are working diligently to preserve and restore it for generations to come. We rely solely on donations for this and are currently working to repair the headstones, the walls, caretakers hut and maintain the grounds of the site, which is located in the heart of the city.

The community extends our gratitude to you for any assistance you can offer to help us achieve this goal.

Thank you - the Trustees.
