Peggy and Shawn Fredericks and their son Casey ranch on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation near Busby Montana. On September 2, 2020 the Sarpy fire fueled by extreme drought and 50 mph winds raged through the country burning the pasture and all in it. In the first 24 hours of this catastrophic fire at least 150 head of cows and calves were burned and perished, 95% of Peggy and Shawns pastures lost to the fire. Additionally 400 tons of hay, corrals, and miles of fences were destroyed. In the aftermath livestock had to be found relocated to feed, evaluated for burns, doctored, and in worst cases put down. This years calves will have to be sold in the next two weeks at lighter weights resulting in further financial hardship. The financial impact of this catastrophic fire has been devastating for Peggy and Shawn and will carry into at least next year as they look for grazing options and try to put their cow herd back together.
