Pedro's Kidney Transplant Fund

Donation protected
This is the story of my brother ... it is also the story of many people with chronic kidney conditions.

We are three siblings; my older brother, Pedro Javier, 47 years old, has a progressive renal condition.  He currently only has a kidney function of less than 5% and needs a kidney transplant. He has a beautiful family; his wife Paola and his beloved children Lorenzo, 9 years old, and Anneliese Sofia, 3 years old.

This is his story:

When my brother Pedro Javier was 24 years old he suffered an injury to his back and was sent to have an MRI. With this MRI it was discovered that there were cysts in his kidneys so he was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease (PKD). This disease brought us back to childhood, since our father, at around 30 years of age, had symptoms related to kidney cysts. Our father also suffered from heart problems and after two years of performing dialysis his heart gave out and he died at the age of 50.

PKD is a progressive genetic disease in which groups of cysts are formed, mainly in the kidneys, which cause them to enlarge and stop working overtime. Cysts are round, non-cancerous sacs that contain fluid. They vary in size and can become very large.

Over the years, Pedro Javier has begun to suffer the symptoms related to this disease: high blood pressure, tiredness, joint pain, fluid retention; symptoms that have been deteriorating his health and quality of life.

In December 2018, my brother started dialysis. His doctors have told him that he needs a kidney transplant. Pedro Javier will require two operations.  In the first (Scheduled for - 06/25/2020), both of his kidneys will be removed because they are too large.  In the second the kidney transplant will be performed.

My brother has been working with the Yale Transplant Center in New Haven Connecticut to meet all the requirements to be added to the UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) list and receive a kidney transplant. One of the requirements for transplant eligibility is the patient's financial situation. Although the transplant operation is covered by medical insurance, the patient must demonstrate the economic capacity to sustain the organ after the transplant. This includes costs of immunosuppressant drugs that are necessary so that the body does not reject the transplanted organ.

After the operations, Pedro Javier will be in recovery approximately 16 weeks so he will be out of work and will not generate income to support his family.

Some of the things the money will cover include the following:

* Medical bills not covered by the medical plan
* Housing expenses - rent, utilities, food
* Immunosuppressive drugs
* Hospital and attendance expenses, such as parking, gasoline, snacks

We need your help. Whatever you can send will be a blessing.

We want to give him an opportunity to live and continue to hold his children and family as he always has. Pedro Javier is a son, father, husband, brother and exemplary friend. Worthy of the possibility. Say yes to Pedro Javier, help us. We will be more than grateful for your contribution.

Thank you for sharing this page and his story with your friends and family.

Gisella
