Pedal Power: Paul Spencer's Human-Powered Circumnavigation of the Globe
The Immediate Challenge: Pedaling Across the Tasman Sea
Hello, my name is Paul Spencer, and I am preparing for a world-first human-powered adventure.
I am seeking support for my training run: to become the first person to PEDAL a boat from New Zealand to Australia.
This epic journey will take place aboard a 38-foot custom-built, carbon fiber pedal boat. This vessel was specially designed by the world-renowned team at LOMOcean Design in New Zealand.
The Ultimate Goal: A New World Record
This Tasman crossing is the crucial first step toward my ultimate ambition: to set a new Guinness World Record for the Fastest Human-Powered Circumnavigation of the Globe.
My plan is a true man-powered journey:
Across the Ocean: Using the custom pedal boat.
Across the Land: Using a pedal bike.
The current record, held by Erden Eruç, stands at 5 years and 11 days. I am planning to complete the entire circumnavigation in close to 3 years, which would smash the existing record!
The Vessel:
A Transformed Ocean Pioneer has a fascinating history. It was originally built as the "Tasman Rower," designed specifically to cross the Tasman Sea by oar, a testament to its inherent strength and seaworthiness. It's fitting that its first grand adventure will still be crossing the Tasman, but under a new power system!
I acquired the boat in 2019, and after the challenges of the past few years, it has undergone significant modifications. The transformation into a pedal-boat was expertly executed by Brian, Jarrod and Adam at Harkin Boat Works, working directly with the original designer, Craig Loomes from LOMOcean.
Craig is the power behind the design. When I first reached out to him about my idea, he was fully supportive, saying he had always believed a pedal-powered boat would be better suited for an ocean crossing than a rowboat.
