Pedaling for Education for Women

My name is Linda, but my grandchildren call me Nana. Two years ago during the pandemic, I decided to try to cycle again after 40-plus years. After a lot of research and savings, I got a semi-recumbent, adult, electric trike I named the Orange Crush. Since then I have pedaled over 1700 miles. On April 1st, 2023, I WILL ride a total of 2000 miles on the 2nd anniversary of starting my adventures with the Orange Crush. I have old joints, a bad back, and a lot of health issues, but the riding has kept me moving and filled me with joy. I want to give back all the joy I can to others now. That is why on April 1st, 2023 I am going to ride to the 2000-mile mark on the Orange Crush up a challenging mountain road in the foothills of the Sandias (New Mexico), and I want to raise funds to donate to women's education.

I belong to a women's organization called P.E.O. "P.E.O is a philanthropic organization where women CELEBRATE the advancement of women; EDUCATE women through scholarships, grants, awards, loans, and stewardship of Cottey College, and MOTIVATE women to achieve their highest aspirations." One of those scholarship opportunities is called the P.E.O. STAR Scholarship. It provides scholarships for exceptional women in their final year of high school to attend an accredited postsecondary educational institution in the coming year after graduation. Women in local chapters sponsor someone for this and we are always glad to sponsor young women! To learn more about P.E.O., please visit www.peointernational.org. I will update you as I go along on different scholarships available. I am happy to talk to anyone about the incredible work P.E.O. has done since it began shortly after the Civil War ended. Yes, it is old and STRONG, helping women reach for the stars!

I want to show that even Nanas can get out and keep moving, but I want to do something of value for the next generations after me by encouraging donations to this organization of women volunteers. They are truly a Sisterhood waiting to help! I want to raise money to give my granddaughters and other women like them a chance to get the education they dream of and reach the goals they hold dear. While I face the challenge of getting up that mountain, I hope you will join me in raising funds for women's education.

If you can, join me by sending me a DM if you know me, but if not, pedal, walk, run, MOVE on April 1st starting at 9 a.m. Rocky Mountain Time. In the spirit of joy and caring we will pedal forward for the chance to help our descendants find a better, stronger future.

  • NOTE: "P.E.O. chapters support the educational and charitable funds of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, but are not classified as charitable by the IRS. Therefore, donations to individual chapters do not meet the IRS requirements for a charitable income tax deduction. P.E.O. shall not be liable in any way for any goods and services supplied by third-party vendors or public establishments."
