Pedaling Across the Country for a Greener Future!

Hi, I am Mateo, a 15-year old high school student from Los Angeles, CA. This summer, I am going to be cycling more than 3,800 miles across the entire United States -- from the foggy beaches of Seaside, Oregon to the bustling boardwalks of Coney Island, New York. I will be riding with a group called Teen Treks, an organization that arranges bike trips for middle and high school students.

Although I know the journey will be extremely challenging, one of the main reasons that I wanted to do this 56-day ride was to experience the beautiful scenery and nature across the United States. Throughout this trip, I will see the forests, deserts, mountains, plains, lakes, and so much more. However, these places are under threat. Due to climate change and deforestation, some of these special areas are being degraded or disappearing altogether. This is not just occurring in the United States, but all over the world.

I care a lot about the environment, and I believe that it is necessary to protect these fragile ecosystems and preserve our natural treasures by reducing carbon emissions and restoring ecosystems. Because the effects of environmental degradation have no borders, I decided that I would like to use my ride as a catalyst to raise money for Eden Reforestation Projects, a charity that organizes massive reforestation campaigns across the world, planting hundreds of millions of trees and employing thousands of locals in the process. This approach restores ecosystems that have been previously destroyed, not only supporting the flora and fauna, but also sequestering millions of tons of carbon every year, helping the whole world.
