Dear Friends and Family,
I am so excited to share with you that for my Bat Mitzvah Project, I am going to be addressing the issue of food insecurity. Back in November, when SNAP benefits were being cut around the US I did a podcast about food insecurity and how SNAP benefits impact 13% of the households around the US. Around that time, my temple, TBE worked with an organization, Volunteer Ventures, to help address the issue by creating and distributing jars of soup.
This is a unique approach, because these soup jars contain only dry ingredients, which make them shelf-stable for around a year. With hot water, each jar can cook in around 30 minutes to create an hearty, instant, hot meal for people and families in need.
I was moved by the impact that these jars could have on families whose SNAP benefits were affected - so moved that I felt that it would be important to share the project with others.
I spoke with the Dean of my school and we planned an opportunity for my classmates to participate in a soup jar creation event, where they too can contribute to solving food insecurity, and learn more about this community wide problem.
I am hosting this GoFundMe to raise the money needed to make 285 soup jars. Each jar costs around $7 and we are hoping to raise $2,000.
Thank you so much for considering a donation,
Maya
