On November 11th at 9:38 pm Shandi Maughan Owens delivered an angel from heaven. Baby pearl weighed 5 lbs 2 oz when she was born and was born not breathing, nurses quickly got her breathing and took care of her. She was still not doing very well and started having seizures throughout the night. Pearl was delivered full term but due to a condition called Trisomy 18 her growth in the womb was stunted. Pearl was life flighted to the University of Utah Medical Center a mere 10 hours after being born and the Dr.'s found she has an Atrial Septal Defect which means she has a hole in the upper chamber of her heart, which was caused from the Trisomy 18. Among this and fluids in her brain Pearl has other medical problems that have been caused from the Trisomy 18. Dr.'s are still working hard to help Pearl along and Shandi is staying right by her side taking care of her as much as she possibly can. Shandi has been waiting so long for baby Pearl's arrival and is so happy to have her here. The Dr.'s have told Shandi there is a 30% chance that Pearl won't make it more than a month and there is a 10% chance that she will make it more than a year. Shandi lives in Vernal and is currently staying in hotel rooms in Salt Lake that are kindly being paid for by family members but could use any help with medical bills and or hotel stays until there is availibilty at the Ronald McDonald House. Anything will help, please open your hearts for this sweet angel and her amazing mother!!
