Pe’ahi’s Surgery Fund

Scary past few days with old man Pe’ahi, who suddenly became weak and lethargic on Friday night (May 11). He turned 14 a week ago, and although old for a dog, he’s in quite good shape for his age, thanks to the care & exercise he has always had. We monitored him closely for the next two days, during which he seemed to recover a bit, but wasn’t doing so well the next morning, at which point we took him to the vet. Doc did a workup on him, and unfortunately the blood panel & ultrasound showed a tumor on his spleen. The mass had started bleeding, causing him to become anemic (hence his weakness) and he needed help immediately. Out of nowhere, we went from having the active, feisty, puppy-like dude we are used to, to being given the news that he would require a serious surgery, or need to be put down virtually immediately. If you know Pe’ahi, you know this guy has tons of life left in him, so there was no way we could just give up so suddenly. After talking with the doctor, we went ahead with the surgery, which was done yesterday evening (May 14). He stayed overnight, monitored and on fluids. Sounds like it was initially a bit rough, but he perked up today, and is slowly but surely showing more positive signs of recovery. No bad signs yet. The biggest piece of good news so far is that the tumor had not spread elsewhere in his body, and the surgery went well, considering. Although he seems to be himself, despite being tired and still weak, it’s now a waiting game to see how his recovery progresses. Knowing him, he will be back to his puppy state in no time. Big guy is already walking, peeing, and drinking water on his own, but mostly napping. Please send positive energy his way - the world isn’t ready to lose this wise old man just yet.

Neither of us are the type to ask for money, but enough people have asked to help with the surgery cost (which isn’t exactly cheap), so we decided to set up this donation option for all those who love Mr. Bones. Between a very recent move and the high cost associated with a new house, and after months of paying double rent due to unexpected circumstances, things are already tight enough and all savings depleted, so any willingness to help is incredibly appreciated. Remember that it is going directly to saving this very special guy’s life.

We were told the surgery would be at least $3,000 (splenectomy & explorative) and the initial visit $300-400. He will also have stayed the night, had after hours services, and spent a few days hooked up to fluids & meds. Not one extra penny will be accepted, and we are very grateful to each and every person who graciously chooses to help us out with this sudden expense for Mr. Bones.
