Our beautiful daughter Kaniyah, or as we call her "Peachy", has entered a battle with cancer.
Last month, upon school closures and the hysteria that was brought along with Covid-19, we noticed that our star basketball player was losing weight and experiencing bad aches in her joints. We thought it may have been from inactivity because school had been out for a few weeks and due to both Jamie and I being essential workers, Kaniyah and her little sister Arianna would be home during our workday not being able to run around like kids should.
On 4/23 Kaniyah woke up vomiting with a fever of 102.5. I called the advice nurse and was directed to go my local emergency room immediately. Due to Covid-19 this was more of a challenge because Arianna was not allowed at the hospital under any circumstances. I called Jamie and told him he needed to come home from work as soon as possible so I could take Kaniyah in. They did blood work, an echo-cardiogram and chest x-rays. We were told to let her rest for the next few days and we would get a call by Monday with results.
Two days later at 10am we got a call that we needed to head to Doernbecher Children's hospital as soon as possible and to pack a bag. Little did we know our lives would literally flip upside down after that call. We got to the hospital and all we were told is "I'm not sure" and "Her labs aren't normal", nobody was giving us answers.
After countless more tests, blood work, questions, and tears, Dr. Katrina came to us and said, "I can't say 100% until I see more labs but I'm 90% sure Kaniyah has cancer." Our hearts dropped. The next day on 04/27 it was confirmed that she has Accute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
Covid-19 was running a muck and now this. I've decided to stay home from work as Kaniyah was put on a rigorous medication regime at home and has appointments weekly for chemotherapy, blood tests and spinal taps in which she has to be sedated. Jamie has continued to work but has to occasionally miss days for appointments since there are so many restrictions right now at the hospital. With one parent working as much as he can and a plethora of new expenses that have come along with this diagnosis we are reaching out to our friends and family for help.
We know that things are hard for everyone right now, but nothing could have ever prepared us for this. The money will be used to help with transportation, medications not covered by insurance and bills that we know we may need help with eventually. Kaniyah has a long battle ahead of her and we want her to focus on kicking cancers butt like the strong young woman we know she is.
Thank you for your prayers, support, and Love.
