Peaches Hospital Stay
It all started Thursday morning, Peaches woke up not herself, she is usually bouncing off the walls with energy and waking mom up with lots of kisses and yawns, today was different . She was very lethargic, didn't want to eat ,play or even move. Emily drove her to the vet immediately and pleaded them to take her unscheduled. Peaches was evaluated most of the day when her blood results came back as anemic . This disease is one where the red blood cells attack each other and it makes the dog very tired and hard to breathe. Peaches was at a 24 % blood count which is below average . In a matter of hours Peaches was down to 15% which is EXTREMLY low and she needed a blood transfusion to replace the lost red blood cells. She was then taken to VSS west where she had a transfusion and started some medication. Two days after being there her blood numbers dipped again to 15% leaving her needing another transfusion but the hospital was out of blood .There is a state-wide blood shortage in Missouri (we tried to donate our others dogs blood but its prohibited ) So the the only option was to transfer her again to University of Missouri Columbia where they have blood should she need one , which she does at this very moment. Peaches was very yellow with jaundice when they picked her up .Yellow as in before you get surgery and they cover you in iodine. She was trying so hard to be her normal self with love and kisses but was lathargic and frail. Today (Monday, July 12th) we made the decision to have her spleen removed as a last resort to euthanasia. After four days of recuperateing and four more transfusions Peaches came home today! She will be on a strict watch to see if she becomes lathargic or her blood count gets too low (Thursday, July 15th ). She is on six medications and hates taking everyone of them. She will be a couch potato for the next few months but loves getting all the cuddles. Today( Saturday, July 17th) Peaches went into the vet and got her blood tested. Her blood count is at 19% which is stable . There is plenty of room for improvement but as of now she is perking up and seeing what all of the sounds around her are. And this is where we stand in our journey. Peaches is the most lovable , social, upbeat dog. With her 1 1/2 years of life here she has been an angel and a true light in their home. She loves weird noises and playing fetch. She LOVES playing in the water but only up to her ankles haha. Peaches was Justin and Emily's first animal/ fur baby together and a big hole lives in their heart watching this unexpected journey unfold. Peaches is raking up unexpected medical bills with transfusions, 24/7 care , and medications to help her come home to her family. Any and all donations would mean the world to this family while they keep fighting this battle.
