I'm raising money for student scholarships to St Aloysius Gonzaga High School, a school for children from Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya whose lives have been impacted by AIDS.  All students are on scholarship and without St. Al's would not have been able to continue their studies past elementary school.  Any gift will make an impact!

St. Al's Story
This year marks the Fifteenth Anniversary of St. Aloysius Gonzaga High School which began its mission in January 2004 by welcoming 21 Sophomores and 35 Freshmen, all promising AIDS-affected youth from devastating poverty, who would not be able to access a secondary education without the scholarship we provided.   In 2005, the school doubled its intake of Freshmen on scholarship to 35 girls and 35 boys for a total of 70 new students, and we have continued this policy to the present.   Students are provided with tuition, books, supplies, uniforms, two meals daily, extracurriculars, and basic health care with an annual gift of $1500.

As we looked forward to our first graduates in November 2006, we made the decision to help them continue their journey into productive adulthood through suitable programs. During the gap period between high school and college, we invite our graduates to six months of supervised community service to focus on their formation according to the Jesuit ideal of forming “men and women for others”. We then support our graduates with college studies, both in choosing a suitable field of studies and institution for each and in providing financial assistance.                                                                                                   St. Aloysius Gonzaga 2004

In May 2010, we were able to move from our humble beginnings, housed in simple structures with mud walls and dirt floors to our new state-of-the-art school with well-equipped science and computer labs as well as internet access and projectors in each classroom so we can utilize the most effective teaching methods.

                                                                                                                                                                                                   St. Aloysius Gonzaga 2010

Realizing that many factors of insecurity, lack of electricity, overcrowding in the home, many chores and walking from 45 to 60 minutes each way to and from school daily prevent optimal performance for many of our students, we are presently raising money to build dormitories on land near the permanent school to provide a safe environment conducive to studies for all our students.  We have raised over $1 million of our $1.8 million goal! Successes
We are proud, not only of our current students, but also of our 600 high school graduates, whose lives have been given hope for themselves and their families. Among these we recognize over 300 who have finished their college studies and have taken their place in serving others as teachers, medical practitioners, businesspeople, scientists, cooks, tour guides, social workers, lawyers, and many other professions, including five who are currently serving at St. Aloysius.

Thank you for your consideration of joining me in making a gift to provide scholarships for students of St. Aloysius Gonzaga.   It makes a huge difference in their lives!
